location: the final image for the ad (previous page) was shot
in the Grand Erg Oriental in Algeria, the second largest
continuous sea of sand in the world.

The footprints in the sand are my footprints walking towards
the camera. When I reached the bottom of the dune, I
turned around to capture the image.

The shoot took place during a week long camel trek (see
image to the top right). The image below right is me
thinking about leaving the car and spending
a week in the desert with two camels.

conditions: trekked hundreds of pounds of photo equipment
across some of the most bleak, barren and beautiful
landscapes on earth. All in blistering heat during the day -
freezing cold at night. And braving, what I found out in the
end, was not a camel gone insane, but a camel in heat.

equipment: sand-tight cases for camera gear, compass to
avoid getting hopelessly lost (the guide pictured with
the camels helped too), sunscreen, sunglasses,
and more sunscreen.
